Land Recovery & Restoration
Leading the change in waste management through innovative landfill diversion techniques and effective land recovery.
Landfill Avoidance
At J&J Franks, we are committed to reducing landfill waste through innovative diversion strategies. With a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, our goal is to minimise the amount of waste that ends up in landfills by maximising recycling and resource recovery.
We have obtained a Waste Recovery Permit from the Environment Agency, allowing us to infill the quarried void with inert and non-hazardous waste materials, including low-level contaminated soils and made ground.
This unique new Recovery Permit allows for approximately 5 million tonnes of waste to be used for the quarry’s restoration. Therefore, waste from your construction sites deposited at Mercers will enable you to identify, in your Site Waste Management Plans, that you have achieved the criteria of ‘avoidance of landfill’.
Our Process
Our landfill diversion process is designed to be efficient and effective:
Waste Collection
Waste is collected from various sources, including residential, commercial, and construction sites.
Sorting & Separation
At our recycling facilities, waste is sorted and separated into recyclable and non-recyclable materials.
Recycling & Reuse
Recyclable materials are processed and repurposed for new uses, reducing the need for virgin resources.
Waste Treatment
Non-recyclable waste is treated to minimise environmental impact before being disposed of in compliance with regulations.
Recycling Process
In addition to securing a waste recovery permit, we have recently established a dedicated Soils Recovery Facility. This enables us to efficiently sort and process suitable waste streams, extracting valuable aggregates in the process. This method not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional building materials—an ideal solution for eco-conscious construction projects.
